United Houma Tribe (Louisiana) affected by Hurricane Gustav
With much of the media focus on New Orleans, it seems the Gulf Coast was spared major damages from Hurricane Gustav on Sept 1, 2008. Once again, the Tribal communities of the Gulf Coast were virtually ignored yet suffered significant destruction to their communities. Please visit the United Houma Tribe's website where they have a blog and photos of the damages from Hurricane Gustav:

This online, interactive session provided an introduction to the Northwest Tribal Emergency Management Council (NWTEMC), emphasizing the need and importance of emergency management in tribal nations. The presenters highlighted the partnerships that they have developed with tribes, states, and other entities, the Web site that they maintain for the purpose of sharing information, and the recent planning, response and recovery activities of the tribes as they pertain to the past several disaster declarations in the State of Washington.

In other news: Information about Senate Bill 5296, which would establish a dedicated fund for emergency management in Washington, has been added to the Legislative page.
The NWTEMC also has a congressional proposal asking that Homeland Security fund emergency management for Washington's 29 Tribes so that basic services can be provided and that the Tribes meet federal and State mandates. Information about this proposal can also be found on the Legislative page.
